The Sky Lagoon Experience
When people found out I was going to Iceland, almost everyone asked, “Are you going to the Blue Lagoon?” It’s a valid question because it is by far the most famous geothermal spa in Iceland. The bright blue water, silica mud masks, wooden bridges—It’s every spa lover’s dream. However, we decided to take the leap of faith and check out the newest geothermal spa in Iceland, Sky Lagoon. Sky Lagoon has only been open since 2021, but is quickly rising in popularity and I can see why.

There are multiple packages offered at Sky Lagoon, which you can check out here. But no matter what package you get, it is best to book far in advance because time slots and days do get taken pretty quickly especially during high season. We decided to get the mid-level pass, the Pure Pass, which includes entry to the lagoon, as well as the 7-step ritual.
When we walked in, I immediately got high-end country club vibes. Everything from the smell to the sound was calming. I sure felt fancy. At the check in counter, they gave us 2 wrist bands: One is linked to your credit card in case you want to make any purchases, such as drinks, throughout your time in the spa. It also doubles as the “key” to your locker where you can safely leave your clothes/shoes while in the lagoon. The second one is for entry into the 7-step ritual.
We took off our shoes and entered the locker room, which was very spacious and state of the art. Our pass came with public changing rooms, but if you’re not comfortable freeing your goods out in the open to change, there are individual bathrooms you can go change in. One thing is everyone really respects each other’s space and no photos are allowed in the locker room, which adds that extra level of comfort. Once you’re ready to head to the lagoon, just stick your stuff in any open locker, hold your wristband up to it, and close it. It will automatically lock.
We followed the signs for the pre-lagoon showers, which all have partitions for privacy between them as well as hair conditioner inside each one. However, Sky Lagoon is not like the Blue Lagoon where you’ll resemble the scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz if you get your hair wet. You can get your hair wet in this lagoon with no repercussions. We did a quick little rinse off with our swimsuits on before heading to the lagoon. I read online you had to shower fully naked before putting on your swimsuit and going into the lagoon, but this wasn’t the case. As long as you rinse yourself all over, then you’re good to go, ya filthy animals.
Now that all the prep was done, we were finally ready for the 7 step ritual:
STEP 1: THE LAGOON
Turn the corner to a cave-like entrance with steps leading down into the lagoon. As soon as your foot touches the warm water, you’ll know you’re in for a treat. Engulfed by steam and large grey rocks, make your way through the mineral water. Like Dora, explore every crevice. There’s a waterfall, infinity pool overlooking the ocean, and a swim up bar. Cheers! Relaxation mode is in full force.

STEP 2: COLD PLUNGE
Brrrr. Time to leave the comfort of the cozy lagoon and plunge into the freezing circular pool. You can skip this step if you want, but shocking your body with cold water after warm has a lot of benefits. I say you’re there, at least try it! Even if it is only a few seconds like me

STEP 3: SAUNA
Right beyond the cold pool is a little tuft house that reminds me of Shrek’s house. Here is where you present your wristband and enter the serene sauna. Sit and sweat in silence while taking in the beautiful ocean view through the floor to ceiling window. The higher you sit, the warmer it is. Time to open up those pores, baby

STEP 4: COLD MIST
Feel the slight chill on your skin as you walk through a cold mist, which is quite refreshing post sauna

STEP 5: BODY SCRUB
Rub a sea-salt scrub all over your body to exfoliate your skin. Get ready to have skin smoother than a baby’s bottom.

STEP 6: STEAM ROOM
With the scrub still on, open the glass door and immediately feel the humidity of the steam. The Weeknd said “Blinded by the Lights”, but I felt blinded by the steam in here. Feel around for a seat since you can’t see. Let the steam open up your pores again and let your skin absorb the salt for ultimate softness
STEP 7: SHOWER THEN LAGOON ROUND 2
Shower off the scrub in warm water and immediately feel the softness of your skin. From here, you can choose to head back to the lagoon or to the locker room. We decided to stay a bit longer in the lagoon and enjoy a drink at the swim up bar.

The whole Sky Lagoon experience was the ultimate recharge and relaxation after an International flight and our horseback riding adventure. I think it would also be a great finale to your Iceland trip before headed back home if you choose to. Either way, you can’t go wrong soaking in these healing waters.
