Mighty Gullfoss

She is beauty. She is power. She is iconic. Hello, mighty Gullfoss.

There are a ton of waterfalls in Iceland, but Gullfoss is the most visited and photographed in the whole country. And boy is it a sight to see. We parked at the upper lot and as soon as we got out of the car, we could hear the loud sound of the roaring water. Cue tinkle time. We walked to the upper deck overlooking the falls to catch our first glance of the beast that is Gullfoss. We were pleasantly surprised when we were greeted by a rainbow too.

I can see why it draws so many people in. If you think about it, most of the time you're standing at the bottom of a waterfall and looking up, but what makes Gullfoss unique is you're looking down from the top and seeing the water disappear right into the gorge.

We took the stairs down to the lower lot, where there is a short path that leads you right to the falls. Time to put on that waterproof gear of yours, as it's about to get wet and wild. (really just a little misty and slick). It is amazing to see the rapids up close, moving with some serious speed, reseambling the inside of a blender.

They say what goes up, must come down, and the opposite is true when it comes to hiking. This path felt like a slight decline on the way down, but somehow felt straight up on the way back. We may just be out of shape ha. But we took little breaks and felt accomplished after we made it up. Gotta work off those fried fish&chips from earlier in the day.

We spent about an hour here in total and felt like it was enough time to see both views.

Last stop of the day: Kerid Crater
