Hikes, Mini Horses, and Battlefields, Oh My!-- New York to Pennsylvania

We hit the road again for our final lengthy stretch of the trip. We started off in Niagara Falls, New York and made our first stop of the day at Watkins Glen State Park. When some people think of New York they immediately think of the city, but that is definitely not the case. There is so much more to New York than just the city, especially when it comes to the great outdoors. The gorge trail at Watkins Glen is without a doubt one of the prettiest hikes I’ve ever done. We started by climbing stairs through a cave, which led to a stone bridge over water. Meanwhile, there are rock walls jutting out all around you, completely surrounding you in nature. The rocks aren’t ordinary, but rather look like part of a tiered cake, layered one by one. We followed the water up an endless sea of stairs to the top, which provided us with a spectacular view of the gorge complete with multiple waterfalls.

Our next stop was Hershey, Pennsylvania. CHOCOLATE! We walked in the overwhelming Hershey Chocolate World and were greeted by screaming children every way we turned. It’s okay, I squealed a bit on the inside with excitement too. We walked around the store and bought our fair share of chocolate. We even bought freshly baked cookies, which were divine. I’m drooling just thinking about them.

The third stop of the day was Amish Country in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. I’m quite fascinated by Amish people. I figured out there are different “levels” of Amish people (I don’t know if that is the right term for it). There are those who are super strict where they are completely stuck in the past, and those who are a little looser on the reins. For example I saw one man with a flip phone. I guess it just depends on how they are brought up.

We stopped at a miniature horse farm and country store in Amish Country, which is as cute as it sounds. The horses were so adorable just sticking their little heads out of the door holes saying “hello” to us humans. We pet and fed the horses, as well as the goats nearby.

Following the horse farm we were on our way to Gettysburg. We drove around the Gettysburg battlefield, which was the bloodiest battle site of the Civil War. They had cannons, statues of generals, and memorials throughout the battlefield. It was quite interesting to see it for my own eyes.
