Bar Harbor, Maine

We started the day off in Acadia National Park by driving the Park Loop Road, which is a 27-mile road that hits the main sites in Acadia. The fog immediately took over, which made it very difficult to see the blue water hiding underneath. We still continued onward though and headed to our first stop on the loop, Sand Beach. Sand Beach is a big deal because amidst all the huge rocks, there is one little bit where it is just sand.

From Sand Beach we started our first hike of Acadia—the bowl trail. It started off that we were walking up rocks at the beginning of the hike, stairs in the middle, and more rocks at the end. It was a somewhat vertical hike, but not as vertical as the beehive trail (which mom only let us do part of because you are on the edge of the mountain holding onto iron rungs).

Once we made it back to a flat surface, we continued on the Park Loop Road to Thunder Hole. Thunder hole is an inlet that shoots water straight up when a huge wave crashes. They have a small deck where you can stand and when the wave hits right you get soaked, but we didn’t see any huge waves, so sadly no one got soaked.

By this time it was around lunchtime, our favorite time of day! We decided to drive to “Charlotte’s Legendary Lobster Pound”, which was somewhat out of the way, but received great reviews so we had to check it out. We bought lobster rolls and sat on a picnic table under the tiny awning outside to eat. Lobster Pounds aren’t actually considered restaurants, but rather it is just a shack on the side of the road where you place your order at a window and they call your name when it is ready. There were 4 picnic tables outside and Port-o- potty in the back and that’s about it. Right when we got our food it started to rain and got down in the 50s, but we will put up with any weather for lobster rolls. I can see why Charlotte’s is legendary.. yum!

Since it was just a light rain, we made our way to Cadillac Mountain, the highest point on the Atlantic coast. We started to drive up and made it to the top only to experience mist and fog so thick we couldn’t see a thing.

We made our way back down the mountain and headed into Bar Harbor to shop since the great outdoors weren’t cooperating with us today. We found plenty of cute shops and saw plenty of cute pups walking about in “Bark Harbor”—a dog friendly town. Surprisingly we saw an abundance of poodles or poodle mixes trotting about. Makes me miss Barron and Lil!

By the time we finished up shopping, it was POURING.. and we were hungry again.. what else is new? We went to a pizza place called “Epi’s” to eat dinner and take a brief hiatus from lobster. It was quite delicious and cheesy. Then we headed back to our hotel and climbed under the warm covers to defrost.

Em
