The Blue Lagoon

Home of the VERY blue, pretty water, Malta is an island just south of Sicily (in case you had never heard of Malta like me before the voyage)

It is quite small. To get from one side of the island to the other side is about a 45 min ride–That is if you are going by a taxi. However, we decided to take public transport because we are only college students after all and this whole trip is draining everyone’s piggy banks. So we made it to Comino, which is right on the north coast of Malta, and from there we took a boat to the Blue Lagoon. Blue Lagoon had the prettiest water we have seen on the trip thus far. Basically we just chilled there all day. There wasn’t sand in sight, it was just dirt, rocks, and prickly twig-like objects. It was so crowded we ended up laying our towels right next to a prickly bush and on a rock. I’m pretty sure if you saw me lying down I would have looked like I was doing the worm. That’s how bend I was. But all is good when you’re near water that pretty…. Until a lizard comes out of the prickly shit and it made me almost have a heart attack. Anywho. So we saw some other SASers there and they came and joined our group. At one point some of them went cliff diving (even though SAS said not to and this cliff looked EXTREMELY dangerous). Long story short, one girl in the group that joined ours ended up having to be rescued by a lifeguard and taken to the hospital by boat. Other SASers who weren’t in our group jumped off and one guy broke his tooth and another girl hurt her wrist. Basically no one made it out saying that they weren’t in some kind of pain. It makes me think how stupid some people are. The lifeguard said they had already had eight injuries that day and the day before someone was paralyzed. Like, seriously people.. how does that not stop you from jumping?? Someone needs to knock some common sense into these people. You get nothing out of cliff diving. Then only a couple minutes later a helicopter was circling the Blue Lagoon and then two guys were slowly lowered on a rope down to where the cliff was and apparently they lifted someone out…I don’t think it was a SASer though– thank goodness. To say the least, it was quite an eventful day. Once we got back my friend Kristen and I went out into Valletta and explored a bit. A lot of things were closed, but we managed to find a place that served homemade cake and homemade icecream! Woo! I can now say I have tried cake from a Maltese person. Check that off my invisible bucket list. UPDATE: the person who was flown out of the Blue Lagoon was a SASer.. She is off the voyage now and has a broken back. She is in a hospital in Germany.
